About the Pumpkin Seeds... [Mar. 21st, 2008|05:59 pm]

Last Halloween's jack-o-lantern gave us a whole bunch of seeds, which we've been saving over the winter for spring planting. Pari was all fired up about planting some of the seeds, so we ran over to a nursery and purchased a few dollars worth of cheap plastic pots and soil. So now we have two pots with 3 pumpkin seeds in each. Its actually pretty early for even starting pumpkins indoors, but there are plenty of seeds to plant outside in early May. The good part will be less lawn to mow when the vines spread out. I may even do a raised bed garden sometime later, when my dad and I have removed the derelict shed out back so there is space.

The difficult part is explaining to Pari that you have to wait days or even weeks to see any progress with pumpkins. They are remaining by the kitchen window, otherwise I know she'd keep pulling out the seeds to see if anything has happened yet. I read that you can train the pumpkin vines to climb the wall of a shed and have the gourds grow on the roof. Maybe I'll do that in the future with the good shed, this year I'll be happy enough to get the old shed torn down and the contents arranged in the good one.

I remember when I was a child my mother had some kind of water and glass thing that we could grow seeds into seedlings with. It let us actually *see* what was going on and watch the seed sprout roots and a few leaves before being replanted elsewhere. Perhaps you could look it up and get/make one (I swear ours was homemade) to supplement the learning.

I did a quick Google search and it appears that a glass with a paper towel and some water sprouts many sees. The one I found suggested Nasturtium seeds.

That sounds right, but I was young and don't fully remember.
