Harvested the first of my non-yukon gold potatoes this morning, it's a variety that is a mid season producer rather than early season like yukon gold. I didn't do any mounding so I'm getting fewer potatoes this year, but I knew to expect that. Next year I'll do more.

I'm looking over options for a watering system next year. Having a rain barrel with a pump is attractive, but has more cost than just fixing the drip to the back faucet and putting a timer on it along with soaker hoses. I have lots of work to do with the garden beds but that all waits until plants die off in the fall.

The first squash plants I put in the raised herb bed have popped up, maybe that will keep Kiyan from trying to walk the length of the bed and compress my dirt. I can't blame him too much, it does look fun to walk along. The problem is that it compacts my substrate and crushes any plants starting to grow.

Pari is working on her 4H projects, right now her first batch of experimental preferment for a basic wheat loaf is mixed and working on a 4 hour fermentation. The other frustration to deal with is figuring out what the issue is between the sewing machine and the swimsuit fabric she's trying to make a mermaid tail from.

Looks like all the cecropia caterpillars from the eggs I ordered online are officially deceased. Think I'll swing by a friends farm and see if they have any others that are more grown, and I'll see about keeping them on the apple tree out front in mesh bags like they do.

The sewing machine issue I can address, having been through the Spandex mill before- get a Singer Gold Band needle. They are for knits, and make a neat stitch on those crazy stretch fabrics that tend to look like the tension is maladjusted. Word.

Machine Dealer speaks up

UNLESS your sewing machine is NOT a Singer. Singer machine=Singer needle. Non-Singer machine=non-Singer brand needle.

In that case, please use a Schmetz brand Stretch needle. NOT a jersey/knits needle, but the one designed for stretch fabrics.
Here's a PDF of their pocket guide to needles:

Also, use your walking foot. Really.

Re: Machine Dealer speaks up

Walking foot, that might be the issue along with the needle. Will address both issues today.

He mostly just needed to use the three step zig-zag like I told him to when he first asked. I guess he'd never used that stitch and didn't know where to find it on the machine.
