|meaningless garden rambling...

Since the new herb bed is filled with dirt and ready to go, I got cilantro, basil and lemon balm from Pendletons and put that in a couple of the 15 spaces. In the others went some gourd seeds and summer squash, which will probably take over part of the patio but it's all for fun. Next year all the herbs will go in the herb bed and I'll just do a bed with even more summer squash varieties (they taste pretty much alike, but the different shapes amuse me). |
I'm thinking that both of the 2'x2' beds I made for the herbs earlier this year will be relocated and used for peas and cucumbers, and have an arch trellis to feed them through in the area containing the walking onion bed that I plan to clear out. I'll keep a few walking onions going, but not an entire bed. They are useful for having something growing right at the end of winter but not the best onions for later in the year.
I am going to have so much work to do on the garden beds at the end of the season, mostly reinforcing the corners of the older beds and working new compost into the substrate. That will involve removing and redoing the rope grid, not difficult but a bit tedious and time consuming.
