The kids got some outside time in the wading pool while I pulled lots of weeds in the hot sun. I also defoliated much of the fence so I don't have trees growing through chain link. I was amazed at the pile of weeds I'd pulled, and there are plenty to go. I really need to get a weed puller that allows me to walk along and pull them while standing, I suspect my garden and lawn would be more weed-free with that option. |
My replacement summer squash to replace those taken out by vine borers are coming up. In a mildly humorous moment I discovered that I'd planted them one bed over from where I remember, so the spots of dirt I kept checking had nothing happening but the bed over has several sprouting out of the ground. I should be neck deep in yellow squash in a month or so. The tomatoes are also starting to turn red, and there are plenty of cucumber blossoms but only one cucumber so far.
I pulled about 3 square feet of small onions out of the ground and have them setting out to dry before storing, next year I want to have a winter's supply of much larger onions. I've heard of both braiding stems and the pantyhose method, where you stack them in pantyhose with ties between each onion and snip them out as needed.
