garden update... [Apr. 29th, 2011|04:49 pm]
Verminius Rex
Plenty of planting going on today. Seed planting includes summer squash, snow peas, cucumbers, and walking stick kale. After getting the seeds into the ground I had lunch with solan_t  (sushi lunch special, yum) and  then delivered quilts by Marz and Pari to the quilt show for this weekend. There was space for two more pepper plants in the tomato/pepper bed, so a trip to the nursery on 15th street nabbed me a North Star and Gypsy varieties.  I'm also considering planting a couple of mini pumpkin seeds to grow up the side of the shed on a trellis or net, keeping the vines rabbit free until they are big enough to deter the little buggers would be a minor challenge. I also have some giant pumpkin seeds that might work in a back corner of the yard. They aren't ideal full sun all the time, but  it's just fun planting anyway.

And so far I've managed to keep my garden chart completely updated. Next week (weather permitting) I'll tear apart the two raised beds and rebuild them as the hoop house base. That should be completed in about 2-3 days at a casual pace. I priced 1"x2"x8' cedar at Home Depot ($3.61 each) which I can use 3 to make a bed-length trellis for about $12. I'll make one or two this year and see how they work screwed to the beds, if they work well each bed gets one.
