more sewing progress... [Mar. 24th, 2011|11:17 pm]

I could crank this project out if I wanted to stay up late and sit at the sewing machine for a couple hours, but I have time so I won't rush it.

Tonight I folded and pressed the pleats into the hakama panels and sewed one side together, which isn't difficult but the pleats are about 40 inches long and there are 8 pleats. There was also the issue of how to deal with the pleats and the cuff, so I pressed the pleats, sewed the side seam together, serged and sewed the cuff, re-pressed the pleat and the cuff, then ran a stitch along the length of the folds to keep in the pleats. I've seen this done before on utilikilts and on hakama pics online, so the theory is sound. 90 minutes on the sewing machine was enough for tonight, the outfit is mostly for next year's anime con and also to work out a few sewing theories at the same time. The next outfit is going to be even more interesting, but have to finish this one first.

Next I'll give the other hakama leg the same treatment, then put them together with the waistbands and add some belt loops for the ties.

What? You only do ONE project at a time? I don't know if I could count the number of projects that I have in some state of doing, including the "See that bolt of fabric over there? I has a plan for it." type of projects.

I have plenty of fabric that I plan to do something with "someday" (including but not limited to the cow print that will eventually be a kilt, and some yardage destined to be a waistcoat and pirate coat) but I usually only actively work on one project at a time. Accumulating supplies and costume elements isn't "actively" working on a project, it's passively planning for the possible future.
