September compost sale... [Aug. 15th, 2010|07:24 pm]
Verminius Rex
I was looking up the yard waste pickup and came across the city compost and woodchip sale info here.

Compost Sept 23rd-25th

Wood Chips Oct 7th-9th

I may do the compost sale, although it may wait until spring since that is when I'll be doing the new garden beds. Don't know if there is much use getting a bunch of compost to sit over the winter, then add more in the spring.

Fall is the BEST time to prepare beds...just sayin.' I'd add a layer of manure, too. Preferably chicken or sheep, and let it cook over the winter. Prevents burn, too. Can you get mushroom mulch? The best.

Actually fall composting is great stuff. Now, I had planned to do it with raw cow manure (and if you want, I have the number of a guy who will load your pickup with a bobcat for free :) ... at least that's what his craigslist ad said. I'd planned to do it this year ... but ...

Giving it all winter lets the nutrients leech down into the soil and diffuse into the deeper root zones.

IMO, it'd be a good thing to toss some on and let it sit all winter.
