Another thing I'd like to do this year if I can find the time and materials, is to carve myself a kuksa cup. I have a log of apple that may work, but it's been in the basement for a couple years and I suspect that dry wood may be more difficult to carve than fresh. It calls for birch, but I have no idea what a birch tree looks like, much less where to get a log. The tutorial everyone links to for carving instructions is here, enjoy.

Thanks for the store names, they look like the kind of resource I was hoping to find! Now I can see if they have birch, the traditional wood for this kind of cup. The apple is wood I happen to have from trimming a tree outside, I'm more than happy to wait until I have more experience carving before tackling a harder wood.

Looks like there's a store in Lenexa, I haven't checked to see what else is nearby.
