Prewashing a bunch of yardage isn't complicated, but it does unbalance the washer. It keeps trying to walk off the raised platform in the basement. Just one more length and it's done. The great part is that after prewashing the black lightens just a touch, so it's more like the rubble dust covered trenchcoat I'm basing the costume on.
